Pretty Little Liars is going to end its stellar first season soon, and I know my TV schedule will feel seemingly empty. It has been such a phenomenal first season with so many twists and turns along the way. I’m confident the finale will leave more questions than answers but I can’t wait. I recently had the chance to chat with Torrey DeVitto, who plays Melissa Hastings (Spencer’s sister). We talked about the recent developments with Melissa and Ian, the big season finale and what we might see in season two.
How did you originally get involved with Pretty Little Liars?
Well, I actually just auditioned, which is not an interesting story to tell. But I got the call and I went in and auditioned for Bob Levy, and the casting directors. And the next day, I got the call that I got it and I was just really excited.
You obviously had an ABC Family connection before with Beautiful People, so was it exciting to be back on the network?
Yeah, it was. When I worked on ABC Family before with Beautiful People, it was my first ever series and I was just over zealous and so excited so it kind of felt exciting to go back to where it all had begun. And I really enjoyed working with the network before.
Did you read the book series?
I hadn’t read the books when I went in for the audition but I did read the first book after I got it. But the I realized they were just using the books as kind of a guide line. They weren’t going completely with it. And since they weren’t telling us anything in terms of who A was, I didn’t really want to read the books.

In “Pretty Little Liars’” Feb. 28 episode, “Person of Interest,” we learned it wasn’t Alison (Sasha Pieterse) who was with Ian (Ryan Merriman) at Hilton Head right before her murder; It was Spencer’s (Troian Bellisario) big sister (and Ian’s wife) Melissa (Torrey DeVitto). There goes the girls’ entire theory. But wait — there’s more. Melissa confesses to Spencer that she was pregnant at the time. The couple had escaped to Hilton Head to contemplate having an abortion, but she lost the baby before making the decision. Now we know why her current pregnancy is so important her. Even if it is with a possible murderer. Zap2it caught up with Torrey DeVitto to find out her reaction to the shocking storyline. We also talked about Melissa’s relationship with Ian and Spencer and what we can expect in the finale, which seems like it could change her character forever. We also got her thoughts on the burgeoning Spencer and Toby (Keegan Allen) relationship.
Were you surprised by the pregnancy storyline and the reveal that it was Melissa at Hilton Head with Ian?
Yeah, I was. Melissa is a character who likes to have everything very together in a perfect light and perfect view. So to find out that she had gone through something like that, with the abortion and everything, was just very out of her character and a very interesting new thing to bring to her.
Do you think Melissa really loves Ian?
I think she does. I think Melissa has always had it in her head to have the perfect husband and the perfect family. When Ian came back, he had something to offer for her in that way. She kind of just latched onto it. I think she loves him for that, for providing for her what obviously the Wren situation didn’t provide.

On “Pretty Little Liars” Torrey DeVitto plays Melissa Hastings, who may or may not be married to a murdering, scheming, blackmailing monster. But her real life relationship is equally dangerous as she’s dating Paul Wesley, star of The CW’s red hot “Vampire Diaries” and has found herself the object of envy for his massive army of admirers.
Ok, obviously I say that in jest, but any true Wesley worshipper would be lying if they said swapping places with Torrey for a day (or night) wasn’t infinitely attractive. Luckily for the actress, she finds this fervent fandom endearing. Which is exactly the adjective I would use to describe Torrey, who chatted with PopWrap late last week about the current season of “PLL,” which has thrown her character for several breakfast dislodging loops.
PopWrap: I feel like we’ve learned so much about Melissa over the last 19 episodes, but coming in how much were you told?
Torrey DeVitto: Not much [laughs]. It all happened so fast. I auditioned, got the role and was off to Vancouver a week later. I wasn’t really prefaced with anything, but her storyline has gone through so many twists and turns that I couldn’t have anticipated. I think you just have to figure it out script by script because everything is kept so tight-lipped. I’ll ask the the writers questions, from an acting perspective, and they won’t even tell me!
